Building resilient communities in a climate-changed world

Why Systemic Resilience?

Systemic resilience recognises that climate risks do not occur in isolation. They ripple across sectors, communities and infrastructures.

By understanding these interconnections, regions can avoid maladaptation, design solutions with greater co-benefits, and build climate strategies that are coherent, future-proof and capable of withstanding compound and cascading impacts.

About SystR

SystR is an EU-funded project introducing a novel approach to systemic resilience by linking science and policy through cross-sector, place-based solutions.

Coordinated by Demokritos and funded with €9 million from the European Union, the project addresses systemic risks (those that threaten society's essential systems) by breaking down silos, aligning multi-level governance, and tailoring responses to local strengths through Smart Specialisation Strategies.

Upcoming Benefits

  • An Adaptation Support Tool to guide systemic adaptation, building on P2R's Regional Resilience Journey
  • A Community Empowerment Framework to mobilise local actors in developing tailored, transformative solutions
  • Novel Governance Schemes to strengthen cooperation across scales and sectors
  • Coherent Financial Roadmaps to support the implementation of resilience strategies and solutions
  • An Ecosystem of Resilience Solutions, combining digital tools, cross-sectoral action, and nature-based solutions
  • An Upscaling Toolbox and One-Stop Shop to accelerate uptake and support replication

EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change

The EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, launched in 2021, accelerates the deployment of solutions to enhance climate resilience. It supports regions, cities, and local authorities in preparing for risks like heatwaves, floods, and droughts.

The Mission aims to help at least 150 regions and communities towards climate resilience by 2030 through innovation, knowledge sharing, and pilot research projects. It fosters collaboration among local governments, researchers, businesses, and citizens to implement adaptation measures, including Nature-Based Solutions and early warning systems.
