New SystR booklet supports regions in building collaborative climate adaptation
SystR has published a new Regional Adaptation Board Booklet, providing practical guidance for local and regional authorities, practitioners, and stakeholders looking to strengthen climate adaptation through collaborative governance.
The booklet introduces the concept of Regional Adaptation Boards (RABs) - multi-stakeholder platforms that bring together public authorities, businesses, researchers, civil society organisations, and community representatives to jointly shape climate adaptation priorities and actions. Supported by Climate Innovation Hubs, these collaborative structures create spaces for knowledge exchange, innovation, and shared decision-making, helping ensure that adaptation measures reflect local needs and expertise.
Designed as a practical resource, the booklet outlines a step-by-step methodology for establishing and operating Regional Adaptation Boards. It covers stakeholder mapping, community engagement, governance design, collaborative action planning, and continuous learning, offering a flexible framework that can be adapted to a wide range of geographic, social, and environmental contexts.
The methodology is currently being implemented in SystR’s six demonstration and replication sites across Europe: Rome (Italy), Strasbourg (France), Aigaleo (Greece), Guadeloupe (France), Banská Bystrica (Slovakia), and Galicia (Spain). Experiences from these pilot sites are helping to refine the approach and demonstrate how collaborative governance can support more effective and inclusive climate adaptation.
